Day 5: Nassau, Bahamas
We arrived in Nassua and I was really excited. The weather was great. We ate breakfast and got off the ship in preparation for our dolphin encounter. We wait just outside the ship on the pier for the excursion to begin. We are greeted by a member of the Atlantis hotel staff who then escorts us to another boat that will take us over to the Atlantis hotel were the dolphin encounter will take place. The boat gives us a tour of the harbor pointing out some of the landmarks along the way. I, of course, use this opportunity to take a crap load of pictures. We arrive at the dock near the hotel and are escorted toward the dolphin encounter area. The guide walks us through pretty much every shopping area and gambling area possible. I believe this is to tempt us into spending more money.
At the dolphin encounter, we register and have about an hour before our encounter is set to start. We explore the hotel area and decide we should try to find a computer with internet access so that my wife can contact her mother who gets nervous anytime we travel unless she hears from us. We eventually get to the "library" where there is supposed to be internet access. It was al the way on the other side of the hotel area which is extremely large. It's pretty much the size of an amusement park. We look at the computer and there is a sign there to sign up for internet access. So we head over to the desk only to have his say "The system is down." Great, it was all for nothing. We only had 15 minutes to get back to the dolphin encounter anyway. We make our way back as quickly as we can.
The facility for the dolphin encounter is very nice. They provide us with towels and lockers for our stuff as well as a wet suit. I had never worn a wet suit before and this will probably be he last time. It was very uncomfortable. I was prepared with my camera and the waterproof case that I borrowed from a friend before leaving and was expecting to take some great pictures for my animal lover wife. But guess what? No cameras allowed! I really hate these money making schemes. They don't allow cameras just so they can have their "professional photographer" take pictures for you and then sell them to you. It's BS. I could take just as good a picture myself. Whatever! I enjoyed the experience anyway. You really get to be very close to the animals. You get to pet and hug them and even give them a kiss. It's like having your neighbors dog come for a visit. Afterward, we went and changed and headed over to see the photos. We ended up buying a picture of both of us hugging the dolphin.
It was about 3PM and my wife was getting a little hungry. We stopped at one of the snack shops by the pools. The pricing was outrageous. $12 for a salad. $5 for a soda. I wasn't very hungry so I skipped lunch knowing that we would eat back on the boat. She ended up getting a $2 bag of chips. We decided that we should skip the pool area since we hadn't seen the aquarium yet and time was running short. The last boat from the hotel to the ship was set to leave at 5. There was a free guided tour of the aquarium but we missed the one that left at 3:30 and he next one wasn't going to be until 4:20. Since it was about a 45 minute tour, we had to skip it and do a self guided tour. I took a bunch of pictures (big surprise) and we caught the 4:45 boat back toward the ship. Right at the dock, there were some small shops and we managed to buy some souvenirs for my sister's kids.
Back on the boat we went and headed off to dinner. It was formal night for dinner tonight. I was not prepared at all. All I had was a black button up shirt and the closest thing that I had to dress pants were some jeans. I didn't have any nice shoes either. I ended up wearing my black Converse. The formal night was to require tuxedos or suits. We had another nice dinner with our table mates and at this point, I still did not know their names. At the end of dinner, I got up enough guts to ask them their names. Next stop, Cococay, Bahamas.
